EPOC, or Excess Post-Exercise Oxygen Consumption, is a physiological phenomenon where the body's metabolic rate remains elevated after the conclusion of a workout. This increased energy expenditure continues above the baseline metabolic rate as the body returns to its pre-exercise state. EPOC is also commonly referred to as the afterburn effect.

How EPOC Works

During intense physical activity, the body consumes more oxygen than it does at rest to meet the increased energy demands. This results in a temporary oxygen deficit. After the workout, the body continues to consume more oxygen to replenish oxygen stores, repair muscle tissue, clear metabolic byproducts, and restore homeostasis. This increased oxygen consumption leads to higher energy expenditure even after exercise has stopped.

The magnitude and duration of EPOC are influenced by several factors:
