What is a Snatch?

Online Glossary / Quick Reference

A competitive Olympic lifting exercise where the weight is raised from the floor to overhead in one fluid movement.

About Snatch

The snatch is one of the two lifts in olympic weightlifting, the other being the clean and jerk. It is a highly technical lift that involves raising a weight from the floor to overhead in a single, fluid motion. This exercise requires a combination of strength, speed, flexibility, and coordination, making it one of the most challenging and rewarding lifts in weightlifting.

Steps to Perform a snatch

  • Setup: Stand with feet shoulder-width apart, toes pointed slightly outward, and grip the barbell with a wide grip, typically wider than shoulder-width.
  • First Pull: Lift the barbell from the floor by extending your hips and knees, keeping your back straight and the bar close to your body.
  • Transition: As the bar passes the knees, pull it explosively upwards by extending your hips and knees forcefully, shrugging your shoulders, and pulling with your arms.
  • Catch: Drop under the bar quickly, catching it overhead with your arms fully extended and your body in a squat position.
  • Stand Up: Rise from the squat position to a standing position with the barbell stabilized overhead, completing the lift.

Benefits of the snatch

  • Full-Body Workout: Engages multiple muscle groups, including the legs, back, shoulders, and core.
  • Power Development: Enhances explosive power and speed, beneficial for athletic performance.
  • flexibility and coordination: Improves flexibility, coordination, and balance due to the dynamic nature of the lift.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Improper Technique: Ensure proper form and technique to avoid injuries and maximize the effectiveness of the lift.
  • Rushing the Lift: Perform the lift smoothly and deliberately, focusing on each phase to maintain control.
  • Neglecting Mobility: Work on flexibility and mobility, particularly in the shoulders and hips, to achieve the necessary range of motion for the snatch.
