A tendon is a strong, fibrous connective tissue that attaches muscle to bone. This tissue is essential for movement, as it transmits the force generated by muscles to bones, enabling various physical activities. Tendons are composed of collagen fibers, which provide tensile strength and durability, allowing them to withstand the stresses of muscle contractions.

Function of Tendons

The primary function of tendons is to connect muscles to bones and facilitate movement. When a muscle contracts, the tendon transmits this force to the bone, causing the joint to move. This process is fundamental to all voluntary movements, from simple actions like walking and lifting to complex athletic maneuvers.

Common tendon-Related Injuries

One of the most common tendon-related injuries is tendonitis, which is the inflammation of a tendon. Tendonitis typically occurs due to overuse or repetitive strain, leading to pain, swelling, and reduced function. Common areas affected by tendonitis include the shoulder (rotator cuff tendonitis), elbow (tennis elbow), and achilles tendon (Achilles tendonitis).

Symptoms and Treatment of Tendonitis

  • Symptoms: Pain, tenderness, and swelling near the affected tendon. The pain often worsens with movement or activity.
  • Treatment: Rest, ice application, compression, and elevation (R.I.C.E.) are commonly recommended. Physical therapy exercises to strengthen the muscle-tendon unit and improve flexibility can also aid recovery. In severe cases, medical interventions such as corticosteroid injections or surgery may be necessary.
