Mechanism of tetanic contraction

During tetanic contraction, a muscle receives repeated electrical impulses at a high frequency, causing continuous activation of the muscle fibers. When the stimulation frequency is high enough, calcium ions remain elevated in the muscle cells, preventing relaxation and resulting in a sustained contraction.

Types of Tetanic Contractions

  • Incomplete Tetanus: Occurs when there are slight relaxation phases between stimuli, resulting in a wavering contraction.
  • Complete Tetanus: Achieved when the frequency of stimuli is so high that there is no relaxation between contractions, leading to a smooth, sustained contraction.
