What is an Upright Row?

Online Glossary / Quick Reference

Exercise where the bar is lifted vertically from an extended position to the shoulders.

About Upright Row

The upright row is a strength training exercise that involves lifting a barbell or dumbbells vertically from an extended position to the shoulders. This movement targets the deltoids (shoulders), trapezius (upper back), and biceps, making it a comprehensive upper body exercise.

How to Perform an upright row

  • Starting Position: Stand with feet shoulder-width apart, holding a barbell or dumbbells with an overhand grip. The hands should be slightly narrower than shoulder-width apart.
  • Lift: Pull the weight vertically towards the chin, keeping the elbows higher than the wrists throughout the movement.
  • Peak Position: Lift the barbell or dumbbells until they reach shoulder height, then pause briefly.
  • Lower: Slowly lower the weight back to the starting position in a controlled manner.

Benefits of Upright Rows

  • Shoulder Strength: Effectively targets the deltoids, enhancing shoulder strength and stability.
  • Upper Back Development: Engages the trapezius muscles, contributing to a strong and well-defined upper back.
  • Arm Strength: Involves the biceps and forearms, improving overall arm strength.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Improper Grip: Ensure the hands are positioned correctly to avoid undue stress on the wrists and shoulders.
  • Excessive Weight: Use a manageable weight to maintain proper form and avoid injuries.
  • Elbow Position: Keep the elbows higher than the wrists to target the correct muscles and prevent strain.
